What to Do After You Arrive at Your New Duty Station

A PCS move doesn’t end when the boxes are unloaded. Arriving at a new duty station is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming as you adjust to a new community, routine, and lifestyle.

One of the first things military families should do is get familiar with their new area. Explore local neighborhoods, locate essential services, and test out your daily commute. Taking time to learn the area will help you feel at home much faster.

If you're considering buying a home, now is the time to start learning the local market. Home prices, property taxes, school zones, and inventory levels can vary significantly from one duty station to the next. Understanding your options early can help you make a more informed decision when the time is right.

Building connections is just as important. Whether through military organizations, community events, schools, churches, or local groups, creating a support network can make a huge difference for both service members and their families.

It's also important to evaluate your housing goals. Some families are ready to buy shortly after arriving, while others benefit from renting first and getting a feel for the area before making a long-term commitment. There is no one-size-fits-all approach—it's about finding what works best for your family's needs and timeline.

Most importantly, give yourself grace during the transition. Every duty station is different, and settling into a new community takes time.

At The Military Group, we understand military relocations because we've lived them ourselves. Whether you're PCSing to Northeast Florida or preparing for your next move, our team is here to help you navigate the local market with confidence and make your transition as smooth as possible.
